Most visitors visit the city of Avalon, located on the southeastern leeward side of the island. Two Harbors is a small village on the west end of the island. A favorite destination for boaters, campers and adventurers— it is 40 minutes by boat or two hours by bus from Avalon. Encompassing 76-square miles and with more than 50 miles of coastline, Catalina Island is much larger than it seems.

William Wrigley, Jr., of chewing gum fame, purchased controlling interest in Catalina Island in 1919.

In 1919, Wrigley purchased Santa Catalina Island. Initially an investor, Wrigley quickly determined he wanted a more active role in determining the island’s destiny and he became the sole proprietor of nearly all of the island.

Built in 1892, the 2,100-yard Catalina Island golf Course meanders through scenic Avalon Canyon, offering spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean from its nine challenging holes. Pro golfers who played this course as juniors include Craig Stadler, Corey Pavin, and Tiger Woods, who first played here at age 4 and then again at age 14. This historic course also hosted the Bobby Jones Invitational Tournament from 1931-1955.

There were once 2 piers in Avalon Bay, the Steamer Pier and Pleasure Pier. Today, only the Green Pleasure Pier, first built in 1909 remains.
