Houma

Louisiana, United States

Volumnia Farm is a historic house on a farm in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, near the City of Houma. Volumnia Barrow Slatter inherited the farm in 1878 from her father, Robert Ruffin Barrow, son of Bartholomew Barrow of Afton Villa. Robert Ruffin Barrow owned sixteen farms in three parishes in Louisiana and a few extensive land holdings in Texas, making him one of the biggest agricultural empires in the south before the Civil War. Volumnia Farm is where he made his home, and it continues to be run and operated by his descendants, making it one of the oldest family-operated and owned farms. In 1895 a fire partially destroyed the old antebellum home of her father, and she built the present Queen Anne Architectural Style House with Eastlake features in its place. Both Robert Ruffin Barrow’s wife and his daughter were named Volumnia.

Located near historic downtown Houma, the Regional Military Museum is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit dedicated to preserving the memory of those who served. While displaying artifacts from the Civil War to the modern day, the museum also focuses on local history, featuring South Louisiana during WWII. Travel back to a time when Houma housed a massive blimp base to help combat the German u-boat threat in the Gulf of Mexico and German POWs worked the sugarcane and rice fields. The museum is also developing exhibits on the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War in South Louisiana, highlighting the region's role in our nation's past conflicts.
