Hi, I'm Caroline. Have you ever heard about Liège?
Liège, Wallonia, Belgium
Liège is located in the South of Belgium. It can easily be reached by train from Belgium. Trains run multiple times daily and take around one hour from Brussels.

As a Belgian, I know Liège for two things: first off, waffles!
Liège, Wallonia, Belgium
Belgium has two types of waffles: The Brussels waffle and the Liège waffle. The former is a rectangle and made from very fluffy dough, usually eaten with a light sprinkling of sugar on top and a bit of whipped cream. The latter has a rounded shape and is made with a dough that is a lot more dense. Inside you will find little bits of sugar embedded and the outside is usually glazed. It’s eaten as is, no need for sugar or whipped cream to be added.

Second, the city has the absolute coolest train station in the country!
Liège, Wallonia
Liège Guillemins is a good 35 minutes on foot away from the historical city centre. At the time of writing, the city was building a comprehensive tram network which in the future will link the station with the city centre.

What I did not know was how quaint the city centre is...
Liège, Wallonia, Belgium
Liège has a host of little alleys leading into hidden courtyards. These were was lined with workers houses. They are worth popping into, as each “impasse” or alley differs from the next.

The Gothic style Saint Paul’s Cathedral is absolutely spectacular. It’s free to enter and I highly recommend you go. Aside from the majestic altar, vaulted ceiling and brightly coloured 16th century stained glass it’s well worth checking out the cloister right off the Cathedral. The entrance to the cloister is on the opposite wall from where you enter the Cathedral.

Another must visit is the Palace of the Prince Bishops!
18a Pl. Saint-Lambert
Liège, Région Wallonne
The Gothic Palace of Prince Bishops was the former residence of, as the name states, the Prince Bishops of Liège. These days it houses the city’s administration. Visitors can enter the courtyard freely and walk through the intricately carved columns.

Set sail for the Boverie Museum!⛵
Liège, Wallonia, Belgium
I suggest you take a day pass and use the “navette” or little boat as your means of public transport. We opted to visit La Boverie first (the Fine Arts Museum) and then took the boat to the historical center. The boat makes 6 steps along the way. If you want to make but one stop, simply purchase a €2 ticket on board. If not, opt for the day pass (€8), which can also be purchased from the skipper on the boat.
