For a different type of natural experience in Louisiana, visit the J.C. “Sonny” Gilbert Wildlife Management Area located in Catahoula Parish. Formerly known as Sicily Island Hills WMA, the area is comprised of a uniquely rugged terrain with ridges as high as 245 ft. above sea level quickly dropping to creek bottoms as low as 35 ft. This type of topography allows for natural waterfalls found nowhere else in the state. The best time to view the falls is after a heavy rain.

Although not overly impressive in height, the raw beauty of the falls and the surrounding landscape is a unique natural experience that no nature lover should pass up. The area contains 2 primitive camping areas and 3 nature trails for enjoying the outdoors. Be aware that to access WMAs in the state requires the purchase of a Wild Louisiana Stamp (1 day option available for $2) or WMA Hunting Permit; these can be purchased online @ website above or anywhere licenses are sold. A free self-clearing (check in/check out) permit must also be obtained from a Self-Clearing Permit Station or electronically through the WMA Check-In/Out app.

As the longest trail in the WMA, Big Creek Trail can be difficult to navigate and somewhat strenuous. Blazed in orange, the trail begins on an old road before heading down hill through wetland areas. Eventually following Big Creek and other natural waterways before heading back uphill looping around to the start. Several small cascades can be viewed following the waterways. Hike along the over 1-mile St. Mary’s Falls Trail, blazed in green, to find St. Mary’s Falls. The 10 ft. falls pours from Sandy Bayou over a sandstone ledge. There is even a small, shallow cave to explore tucked away behind it! At 17 ft. in height, Rock Falls takes the claim of being Louisiana’s highest waterfall! To find this Louisiana treasure, take the Rock Falls Trail which follows a red blazed path looping down into a gulley, making its way around and over the falls. To get a better perspective, hike down the gorge to the base of the falls. The trailhead is marked by a small shelter at it’s start.
