With dozens of hiking trails, it’s considered one of the best locations for hiking along Highway 1. Enjoy a wide range of hikes here, from flat, open and easy trails that skirt the bluffs to multi-mile trails that summit challenging peaks. No matter which you choose, it is guaranteed to include scenic ocean views, sometimes even with glimpses of Morro Rock and other landmarks. Take breaks along the way to sit on a bench, check out tidepools, or simply take in the scenery.

Morro Bay is known for its abundant sand dollars, particularly along Morro Strand State Beach. The beach is a popular spot for finding both live and dead sand dollars, especially during low tide and after storms. Our guests often enjoy searching for these unique sea creatures and other shells and rocks along the sandy shore. Just two miles north of Morro Rock is a sandy paradise with plenty of room to spread out and stay a while. Explore the dunes, search for sand dollars, watch the surfers, and play in the sand while you listen to waves crash onto the shore. Beach access and parking is located off Atascadero Rd off Highway 1, from San Jacinto Street just past The Cloisters Park, or from Morro Strand State RV Park and campground.

For a truly chill sunset experience, Baywood Park offers a tranquil estuary setting to enjoy still waters perfectly mirroring the sunset-streaked sky.

A sprawling state park in Los Osos, Montana de Oro is famous for its wildflower-strewn hillsides. The name “Montana de Oro” translates from Spanish to English as “mountains of gold,” an homage to the colorful poppies that cover the terrain seasonally. Temperate coastal weather makes for perfect growing conditions along Montana de Oro’s dunes, bluffs, prairies and hillsides. In spring, you’ll find more than orange California poppies: Look for yarrow and mustard, wild iris, goldfields, lupine and many more. Hiking, biking and horseback riding are the best ways to access views of these wildflowers up close. Of course, you can also simply drive through the park and catch an eyeful. For a quick hit of springtime blooms, head to the Bluff Trail. Find the trailhead off Pecho Valley Road, just beyond the Montana de Oro Visitor Center. Park in the lot across from the sign for the Valencia Peak trailhead. For a more immersive wildflower experience, reserve your spot on the Point Buchon Trail. Only open to a handful of hikers at a time, this beautiful trail can only be hiked with a guide. Be sure to reserve your place in early spring to ensure one of the best wildflower views on the Central Coast.
