USS Ponchatoula Memorial
Louisiana, United States
Housed next to the Collinswood Museum, the memorial is a replica of the deck of the USS Ponchatoula. During World War II, the federal government called for a scrap metal drive to help build military ships and machinery. In an effort to aid in the cause, Ponchatoula High School (PHS) participated in the scrap metal drive, collecting the most scrap metal in the nation! To honor the faculty and students at PHS, the U.S. government christened a ship called the MS Ponchatoula. On Sunday, July 30, 1944, the ship set sail in New Jersey. This memorial is a beautiful tribute to those who served on this ship.
