Just 70 minutes off Venturaโs shore, the five islands of Channel Islands National Park offer the wild silence of one of Americaโs least visited National Parks. The Park islands are often called the โGalapagos of North America,โ which actually undersells the place; an extraordinary playground for camping, hiking, sea kayaking (Santa Cruz Island has some of the best sea cave kayaking in the world), scuba diving, bird watching and just inhaling salty solace.

Ventura has empty, sun-ladled beaches โ and thereโs no better time for a deep inhale of salt air and serenity. Pick any beach. We specialize in empty. And if the beach isnโt quite empty enough for you, walk a quarter-mile and it likely will be.

6. Swans ๐ฆ
Ventura, CA
Ventura Boat Rentals at Ventura Harbor Village recently added Swan pedal boats. Itโs a lovely way to explore Ventura Harbor and -- how to put this delicately? -- perhaps socially distance when you need it. For some real magic, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays you can take an evening Swan spin as the setting sun throws gold across the water (reservations are required for the evening rentals).

7. Main street is closed to traffic ๐ฆ
Ventura, California, United States
Ventura has adapted to the challenges of Coronavirus with creativity, including closing five blocks of Ventura's downtown Main Street to traffic, making an easily walk-able downtown more walk-able still. Along the five-block stretch (from the San Buenaventura Mission to Fir Street), restaurants offer outdoor seating, retailers have moved some of their wares out to the sidewalks, and you can stroll down the middle of the street (allowing for social distancing). There are also tables with umbrellas and chairs. Think Europe -- by the sea.

Ventura has the wide open spaces we need in every time. To get a great overview of the Ventura landscape, start with a walk around Grant Park. Just below Grant Park, the Ventura Botanical Gardens offer a stunning wander among the loveliness of five Mediterranean climate zones (some 160-plus species). And the same spectacular ocean panorama. Or head for the equally panoramic hills in Arroyo Verde Park. Last but not least, Venturaโs newest hiking (and mountain biking) gem. Thanks to the diligent work of the Ventura Land Trust, recently opened Harmon Canyon offers 2,100 acres of hillside nature preserve, a pastoral heaven of gnarled oaks, downy grasses, and wind-kissed vistas. A place to hear the things that matter.
