The Morro Bay Maritime Museum’s mission is to provide an easily accessible educational venue for maritime history, science, and technology. Interpretive Exhibits include: •a Salinan Tribe Tule Boat showcasing the stories about our Central Coast Native Americans. •Morro Bay’s commercial and sport fishing industries. •Morro Bay military history, including the U.S. Navy’s vital role in developing our early culture and economic base while establishing a WWII Amphibious Training Base literally reconfiguring the bay of Morro Bay. •Central Coast bays, inlets and ocean have always been prime for recreational and commercial boating and sailing. •And Morro Bay has enjoyed visitors in yachts and tall ships from afar -- explorers, traders, and merchant sailing ships. •See the full-sized tugboat ALMA, which earned its place in WWII history. •Discover why the U.S. Navy built two DSRV-Rescue Submarine’s after the disaster at sea of the Thresher. •The U.S. Coast Guard’s Roll-over Rescue Craft lives to tell many a story at MBMM. The Morro Bay Maritime Museum was the brainchild of the late Brent Roberts. In the early 1990’s Brent assembled a group of like-minded folks who shared an interest in preserving maritime history. After a few meetings this group decided to call themselves the Central Coast Maritime Museum Association (CCMMA) and in 1995 the group incorporated itself as a a public-benefit, non-profit entity. In the ensuing years the CCMMA board of trustees worked with City leaders and the business community to explore viable locations on the Morro Bay waterfront for a Maritime Museum. Meanwhile, while this planning was occurring, CCMMA sponsored and participated in other activities such as more than 20 Morro Bay Harbor Festivals as the host of the Maritime Heritage Pavilion.

In 1941, just weeks before the attack on Pearl Harbor, construction began on the US Naval Amphibious Training Base, located at Morro Bay Harbor. 👷 The Navy engineers deepened the bay, created the jetty that engulfs Morro Bay, placed piers, and created the embarcadero. 🌅 To prepare for the Pacific Theater, the US Navy trained its troops in, "amphibious landing, storming beaches, [and] transporting men, machines, and supplies from ship to shore." 🏖️ They would be put through training exercises like spending long periods of time at sea to acclimate to the ocean and storming beaches on Higgins Boats. 🚣 The troops who completed their training here would later fight in France, the Philippines, and Japan. In the fall of 1945, 🍂 the base was decommissioned and was replaced by the famous power plant, with the three stacks. 🏭
