Vista Hermosa Park lies on ranch land granted by Spain in 1781 to El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Angeles de Porciúncula-the original settlement of Los Angeles. The city's first modern land boom began when oil was discovered only one block away in 1892. Today, the park returns some of the native plant communities that naturally grow in the dry Mediterranean climate of the area. Oak woodland, coastal sage scrub, and chaparral cover the rolling hillsides along walking trails, lawn areas, and picnic grounds. Because it is part of the Pacific Flyway, as many as 350 different kinds of birds might visit the park. As the California Sycamore, ash, Fremont cottonwood, willow, and coast live oaks mature, barn owls and hawks will nest in the trees. Native plants provide the right variety of food for both local and migratory birds, lizards, butterflies, crickets, and other wildlife to live.

It’s also a nature and wildlife preserve in the middle of the city.

So much history at this park. It was originally gifted to the Pueblo of Los Angeles from Spain in 1778. 🤯
