The first university in Estonia - the University of Tartu was founded already in 1632 by the Swedish king Gustav Adolf II. Still, on the top of its game, the University of Tartu belongs to the top 3% of the world's universities. The neoclassical Main Building from the 19th century is a prominent landmark in Tartu and also houses the University of Tartu Art Museum.

Emajõgi or 'Mother's River' flows through Tartu. The medieval-style boat, barge 'Jõmmu' takes you on a trip through history as well as the city. The Emajõe barge is a unique wooden trading vessel. In Estonia, these boats sailed the inland waters for more than 600 years – from the 14th until the middle of the 20th century. Thus contributing greatly to the prosperity of several Estonian towns, especially Tartu.
