Baywood-Los Osos

Baywood-Los Osos, California, United States

Along this abundant stretch of California’s Highway 1 lies so much to explore. And while the natural beauty of its white-sand beaches, majestic mountains and rolling vineyards shines brightly, so too does our cultural heritage. Here, a vibrant community of artists, performers, historians and storytellers brings joy, fellowship and creativity to life on Highway 1. Wander the hallowed halls of one of the world’s foremost art collectors, William Randolph Hearst, at Hearst Castle. Take a walking tour of historic buildings and architecture in Cambria. Visit inventive murals painted on surfaces across the beach town of Cayucos. Bring little ones to a children’s garden to get up close and personal with the indigenous plants that grow along Highway 1. And indulge in belly-laughter in one of the world’s only true melodrama theaters. Music, art, drama and history come together here in a rich, accessible, and enriching environment for the whole family.

During the winter, clusters of orange wings cover the trees in Monarch butterfly groves in Pismo Beach, Nipomo, Los Osos and Morro Bay. (Researchers have counted up to 230,000 Monarch butterflies in a single season at the Pismo State Beach Butterfly Grove.) As the weather warms in spring, the butterflies begin migrating north. Western Monarchs can travel over 1,000 miles to reach their next migration point. Western Monarchs live west of the Rockies and migrate up and down the West Coast, between southern Canada and San Diego. Eastern Monarchs, on the other hand, live east of the Rocky Mountains and migrate south each winter to Mexico.

Los Osos

A hiker’s paradise, Los Osos lies in a valley at the edge of the Pacific Ocean. A hike on the coast might cross a mix of rugged bluffs, sand dunes, a calm estuary or mountains that peak above the fog line. Just inland, find trails that lead beneath canopies of native oak trees. Due to coastal influence, the climate in Los Osos is temperate, with highs between 63 degrees F and 70 degrees F year-round. In other words, you couldn’t find a more comfortable destination for a hike!

Spooner’s Cove Beach - At the point where Islay Creek drains into the ocean, Spooner’s Cove Beach offers a comfortable place to wade, explore tidepools, and picnic. Interesting rock formations invite climbers to play, particularly at low tide. The beach lies just across the street from the Islay Creek Campground, and allows dogs (on leash). As a central point in Montaña de Oro State Park, many trails begin nearby. Amenities include restrooms, picnic tables, and free parking. Find Spooner’s Cove Beach to the right, just before the campground.
