The Taj Mahal gates open 30 minutes before sunrise year-round, I visited in December which is quite cold (jacket and scarf weather in the morning) and arrived 30 minutes before gates opened. There are two lines for entry, one for tourists and one for locals. Because I had booked a local guide (which I recommend!) we were able to go in the local line which meant we got in first. We ran in to be able to get to the main photos spots early before everyone else, then after taking photos my guide gave me a full educational lesson about the Taj and its history.
