1. Sundays at Pier Street Farmers Market

Kicking off on Mother’s Day weekend, the Pier Street Farmers Market is a staple summer event that usually takes place at the Discovery Pier parking lot, but due to the need for social distancing, you can find the market every Sunday on Cedar street. Be ready to be dazzled by crafty wares, tempted by scrumptious baked goods and amazed by the selection of farm-fresh produce.

Located in the Willow Point Neighbourhood, the Bough and Antler Northwest Studio gift shop features’ pottery and other artisan goods. If their locally made t-shirts look familiar, it’s because they’re hugely popular here on the island. The artwork featured on Bough and Antler’s apparel comes courtesy of Scott and Sarah Barrie, who create their designs in the adjoining studio.

Sybil Andrews was an internationally acclaimed artist famous for the linocuts she created from the late 1920s through 1988. After World War II, she moved to Canada, getting inspiration for her art from her property’s views on the Islands of Desolation Sound and the B.C. coastal mountains. The Sybil Andrews Heritage Society, in conjunction with the Campbell River Arts Council, preserves this famous local residence. Using only a single grain (barley), Shelter Point doesn’t lean on blending. All of the grain used in their process is grown right on the farm or purchased from other BC farmers. The Wei Wai Kum House of Treasures is band-owned and operated. The shop is a contemporary interpretation of a First Nations Big House and features jewelry, clothing, masks, home accessories, prints, paddles and souvenirs. All are created by Aboriginal artists, most of who call Vancouver Island and Campbell River home.

10. A long walk along the beach

The Rotary Seawalk is a 6km paved walkway that follows the shores of the Discovery Passage. The path is dotted by chainsaw carvings that are made by artists during the annual Transformations on the Shores carving contest. In addition to the art, keep an eye out for common water sightings including eagles, herons and seals. If you’re lucky, you may even see a pod of whales!
