5 Historical Highlights in Oceanside, CA
Oceanside, California, United States
Today, O’side has beautifully preserved landmarks and neighborhoods from a range of eras ready to transport you back in time. The indigenous people whose land became Oceanside were called “Luisenos” by the Franciscans who founded the Mission San Luis Rey in 1798, following the arrival of the Spanish explorer Portola in 1769. The mission became the center of colonial activity, rooting agriculture in the San Luis Rey Valley. A century later, prosperous ranching and farming families sought retreat from the heat and built the first homes and infrastructure on the coast.

The Bunker House dates back to the 1800s in downtown Oceanside with a colorful history. First owned in 1886 by Theodore C. Bunker. It was a store on the first floor and a boarding house on the second, which is where its name The Bunker House rooted from. The single-story wooden structure next door, which served as a meat market and is now part of our patio. The Bunker House was many things, it was used for town hall meetings, dances, church services, it was a music store leasing jukeboxes, and even a brothel in the 70s. This building's unique past has adapted and changed with it's community and is one of the three only standing brick buildings in Oceanside.

The Graves house on North Pacific Street was built in 1888. It was owned by Dr. Henry Graves, a resident of Riverside. This oceanfront cottage was their vacation home where they would spend their summers. The house was sold to Charles Burlock in 1905. Angeline Morgan later acquired the home and owned it for over 40 years. In 1985 Paramount Pictures rented the house for two weeks and used it as the home of Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis in the blockbuster movie “Top Gun”. Released in 1986 the film would solidify Tom Cruise as a box office success and an A-list star. Since that time, the house became a favorite landmark for both residents and visitors.
