he Cube Houses were designed asymmetrically to resemble an abstract forest, each triangular roof representing a treetop. The residences were constructed on concrete pillars with wooden framing. Standing at three-floors tall, their ground floor is the entrance, the first floor contains an open kitchen and living room, the second floor houses a bathroom and two bedrooms, and in some cases the top floor is used as small rooftop gardens. Once you step inside, the first thing to get used to is that all the walls are slanted. And as you enter the top half of the structure, your initial inclination may well be to mind your head.

In 1960, the Euromast was designed for that year’s Floriade. With well over 100 meters, it was intended to become the highest structure in Rotterdam. Another building took the title just a few years later, after which it was decided to increase the Euromast’s height. 85 meters were added to the construction. It should be noted that the Euromast is not the highest construction in Holland. The radio tower near Lopik has this honor: the Gerbrandy Tower is 361 meters high.

The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was founded in 1849, when the lawyer and art collector Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans left his collection to the City of Rotterdam. Just over a hundred years later, the famous collection by industrialist Daniël George van Beuningen was added. The museum’s building, opened in 1935 and designed especially to house the Boijmans collection, remains a Rotterdam landmark. Its distinctive tower is a familiar feature of the city’s skyline to this day.
