While San Francisco is not the original birthplace of Irish coffee, The Buena Vista Cafe is credited with bringing it to the USA in 1952. Legend has it Jack Koeppler, cafe owner at the time, challenged a Pulitzer Prize-winning writer to help him recreate the Irish coffee served in Ireland’s Shannon Airport. Thus, The Buena Vista’s now-famous Irish coffee was born.
