Spanish Town Road

Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States

The organization (Mystic Krewe for the Preservation of Lagniappe in Louisiana dba SPLL) organizes and produces the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Ball, Parade and Golf Tournament and donates proceeds to local charities. History Spanish Town is a historic district anchored by Spanish Town Road in Baton Rouge. It is well known for its annual Mardi Gras parade, which is the largest in Baton Rouge. The district of Spanish Town was commissioned in 1805. Spanish Town is the site of Baton Rouge's largest Mardi Gras parade, which is celebrated annually on the Saturday before Mardi Gras. The first Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade took place in 1981. Pink Flamingo As a mascot, the pink flamingo is said to represent the saying "poor taste is better than no taste at all", which became somewhat of a mantra for the Spanish Town neighborhood as it grew to include more eclectic residents. The tradition of pink flamingos originates from the celebration of Spanish Town Mardi Gras. Around the beginning of the Mardi Gras season, approximately two dozen large pink flamingos made of plywood are placed in the LSU Lakes, to announce the annual parade will be taking place soon. It is a tradition to "adopt" one of these flamingos, usually by taking a boat out on the lake. There is a unique sense of pride associated in having acquired one of these special flamingos.

For almost two hundred years, Spanish Town's history illustrates the various changes of Baton Rouge's development. Although many people see Downtown Baton Rouge as one unit, the city is really a series of separate neighborhoods that have grown together over time. Although older than Baton Rouge, few original homes of Spanish Town survived the Civil War, and today, the prevailing architectural styles reflect the early 20th Century when Spanish Town was a thriving University community.

It was in January of 2018 when Chef Dirk Dantin had his mind on the upcoming Carnival Season in New Orleans. Yearning to create a fun treat that would be perfect for the multitude of gatherings celebrating the Revelry of Mardi Gras – the Sushi King Cake was born. Like most traditional king cakes, this sushi king cake is quite decadent and certainly colorful. The cake’s “dough” consists of pressed sushi rice which is stuffed with cream cheese and snowkrab. The “dough” is then layered with assorted raw fish, accoutrements and sauces. It is then sliced into 16 pieces for easy picking. A perfect treat for those seeking a conversation piece, and something to complement their traditional sweet king cake. Rock-n-Sake Bar & Sushi is the best sushi restaurant and saké bar around with locations in Baton Rouge, Lafayette and Metairie, Louisiana.

Dedicated to our history. Louisiana's Old State Capitol, a Gothic architectural treasure, stands high on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The 165-year-old statehouse has withstood war, fire, scandal, bitter debate, abandonment and an occasional fistfight. Today, the building stands as a testament to bold, inspired leadership and active citizenship. In 1990, the Louisiana Legislature placed the former statehouse under the jurisdiction of the secretary of state and appropriated funds for a major restoration project. The building re-opened as the Center for Political and Governmental History in 1994. Now referred to as the Museum of Political History, the Old State Capitol has received awards for its architecture, exhibits and preservation.
