Mount Tallac Trail

California, United States

Let’s start the trip off strong. We’re going to conquer the Sierra Nevada’s Mount Tallac right at the beginning of the trip. Standing at an elevation of 9,738 feet (2,968 meters) above sea level, it’s one of the highest peaks in the Lake Tahoe area. The most popular trail is aptly named the Mount Tallac Trail, and is a challenging but rewarding ascent. On the way up, between breaths, you can enjoy diverse landscapes, including alpine meadows, forests, rocky terrain, and multiple lakes, depending on which of the 2 routes you take (Cathedral Lake Route is longer but has more lakes). Your hard work will be rewarded at the top with panoramic views of Lake Tahoe, Fallen Leaf Lake, and the Desolation Wilderness - and chipmunks(!) The chipmunks are adorable and have a way of begging that makes you want to give them all your provisions but be careful - they have the plague. Many people bring a flask to the top for a celebratory sip while enjoying the view. On clear days, it's possible to see as far as the Sierra Nevada mountain range and even parts of the Central Valley of California. Although a very enjoyable experience, Mount Tallac is not a short hike. Hikers average 6-8 hours to complete it so start the day early enough to give yourself enough time to drive into South Lake, check into your hotel, and wash up before dinner. Maybe a little nap if you have time. Pro Tip: Make sure you bring plenty of snacks and water. A good rule of thumb is to take the amount that you think you’ll need and double that.

After the hike let’s settle into our hotel. The Stardust Lodge is a renovated retro accommodation located just 50 feet from the Heavenly Resort Gondola and Village at Stateline, where you can find all the shops and restaurants, just a few minutes walk from the casinos. Dive into the pool after your hike and enjoy a glass of wine in the spa after dinner. The rooftop has lounge chairs, BBQs, and the exact views that you came here for. If you’re in the mood to embrace the vintage vibe, grab some popcorn and a DVD rental to watch in your room. With sub $100 rates at certain times of the year, but with all the modcons you could need, the Stardust is considered one of the best value hotels in mainstay South Lake Tahoe.

Dinner is casual tonight since we’re a little wiped out from hiking and traveling but no need to sacrifice anything in our dining experience - Himmel Haus has it all. A new and popular pub restaurant on the South Lake Tahoe scene, this German-inspired establishment has an extensive beer selection, great food, live music, and a welcoming atmosphere. The decor is Bavarian-inspired but doesn’t feel gimmicky. It’s furnished with wooden tables and benches, and really kind of feels like you’re in a traditional German beer hall. Their menu includes a variety of traditional German dishes, such as schnitzels, sausages, pretzels, sauerkraut, and spaetzle, but there are also plenty of options for vegetarians and salad people. Their wide range of German and European beers is a main attraction amongst tourists and locals alike, with many of them on tap. You can expect to find German lagers, wheat beers, pilsners, and local and craft beers. The tasting flights are a great pairing with the pretzel and beer cheese.

We definitely earned a relax day after Tallac, so we’re going to rent a boat and cruise around one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. GetMyBoat.com (“the Airbnb of boats”) connects boat owners with people looking to rent or charter. You can rent with or without a captain, and you can even rent a jacuzzi boat, which is a great idea since most people don’t actually go into the water in Lake Tahoe (it’s pretty cold, even in the summer). Also check out Action Water Sports. There are plenty of beautiful spots to visit maritime-style on Lake Tahoe - just talk to your captain or rental place about the conditions, which will dictate what you get to see that day. On the hit list are scenes like Emerald Bay and Cave Rock; and if you have party people with you, pull into Zepher’s Cove or Camp Richardson for the famous-but sometimes-treacherous Rum Runners. Pro Tip: It can get cold year-round so be prepared for jacket season, regardless of how beautiful it is out.

It’s our last night so we’re going big - and Chart House is the spot. It’s a tiny bit off the main drag but 100% worth it for the crab legs and views of the lake. This fine establishment is primarily known for its seafood and steak, served in an upscale but inviting ambiance with panoramic views and large windows. Sunset is the coveted reservation block so grab that if you plan far enough in advance. A perfect way to end your Lake Tahoe trip. Pro Tip: The purple drink is fun and ceremonious but Chart House is really a wine establishment.
