Lake Clementine

4.6 (80 Google reviews)

Placer County, CA

Lake Clementine is a reservoir on the North Fork American River Canyon above the picturesque gold rush era town of Auburn in northern California. When fishing on the gorgeous blue waters, you can catch rainbow, brook and brown trout, large and small mouth bass, carp and catfish. There is a boat ramp (Parking Fee) and limited and primitive boat-in camping available for those who want to stay the night on the lakeside. Be sure to take your time and enjoy the scenery, there are plenty of hiking trails available as well!

North Fork American River

Auburn, CA

Be River Wise: The river level and temperature varies. Stop by the Auburn State Recreation Area booth first to be sure you're headed to the correct spot. Click the 'More Details' link here to access a PDF trail map. Clark's Hole (aka Clark's Pool) is a great family-friendly hike to a large, deep swimming hole on the North Fork American River, upriver of the confluence. In the early 1900s, Clarks Hole was managed by the City of Auburn as a municipal swimming pool, complete with concession stands and lifeguards. Today, it is still popular with Auburn locals for picnics and swim parties, although there are no lifeguards.

Euchre Bar Trailhead

4.6 (80 Google reviews)

Casa Loma Rd
Alta, CA

This spot is not for the faint of heart, as it is a difficult hike, but the swimming just North of the suspension bridge is like something out of a dream. The Euchre Bar Trail along the North Fork of the American River has two methods of access. The portion along the river is 5.8 miles, with opportunities for fishing, camping, swimming, and gold panning. Campfire permits are required for campfires, backpacking stoves, BBQs & lanterns. The upstream (east) end of the trail follows the Old Dorer Ranch Road. It passes old mining ruins and abandoned equipment from the Gold Rush era. Since it passes through private property, care should be taken to stay on the trail. Once at the river, you may choose to cross the river downstream at the suspension footbridge and follow the steep trail up the canyon to the other trailhead at Iron Point, near Casa Loma off of Interstate 80.
