17 Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes
Luxembourg, Luxembourg
A symbol of Luxembourg’s unity and stability, the Grand Duke’s official town residence is easy to stumble across in the heart of the city centre. Its intricate stone façade stands elegantly among the lively pedestrian streets around the rue des Marchés-aux-Herbes. Built in the 16th century originally as a city hall, it has had more than a few transformations over the years and today’s structure exhibits some of the finest Flemish renaissance architecture in Luxembourg.

The building has been the home to the dukes and duchesses of Luxembourg since 1890, although during the World War II Nazi occupation it was used as a beer and concert hall and much of the original art and furniture was destroyed. Grand Duchess Charlotte redecorated the rooms in 1960, but it was only fully renovated in the 1990s.

Luxembourg's National Day is on 23 June. The festivities all over the Grand-Duchy start on the eve of National day, June 22nd. Luxembourg City starts the celebrations with a solemn changing of the guard at the Grand Ducal Palace around 16:00. The “Changing of the Guard” ceremony occurs once a month in front of the palace from June to September and attracts a fairly large crowd. There is a fanfare and procession, starting in the nearby streets. A group of guards follow the band and move in perfect synchronisation. The guards swap positions and the procession and fanfare set off again from the front of the palace into the surrounding streets.
