Stadtholder William III had Het Loo Palace built on the Royal Estate Het Loo as early as 1685. It served as the royal family’s summer residence for a long time, but has been converted into a magnificent museum since 1984. The palace’s decorations alone are worth a visit, and the gardens are absolutely stunning.

Hunebedden: 5000 year old passage graves in Drenthe

The ‘hunebedden’ are an emblem of the province of Drenthe. They were created by peasant tribes 5000 years ago. 54 of these graves have stood the test of time. Each passage grave is a tomb made from enormous, solid stones. The stones were left behind after the penultimate ice age and weigh up to 40 tons each.

Dutch cheese production is currently in the hands of dairy factories, which produce and export hundreds of millions of tons of cheese every year. The cheese markets in Alkmaar, Gouda and Edam remind us of the origins of a flourishing cheese trade and have become popular tourist attractions. Delft Blue is the world-famous earthenware that has been produced in the city of Delft since the 17th century. Between 1600 and 1800, this earthenware was popular among rich families who would show off their Delft Blue collections to one another. Although the Delftware potters preferred to call their earthenware “porcelain”, it was only a cheaper version of the real Chinese porcelain.

The world’s longest ice skating competition on natural ice: Elfstedentocht (Eleven Cities Tour)
Friesland, Netherlands
When the temperature drops below zero for a couple of days, the eleven cities fever starts to spread in Holland. A minimum ice thickness of 15 cm is required before the Koninklijke Vereniging De Friesche Elf Steden (Royal Frisian Eleven Cities Association) will approve the ice-skating tour. As the name says, the route of the world’s longest ice skating competition on natural ice runs through 11 Frisian cities. The members of the association start in Leeuwarden early in the morning. The ‘tour to end all tours’ starts when dawn is still hours away.
