This is a little café where cowpokes can sit at the counter and order steak and eggs, a chorizo omelet, pancakes and waffles. The coffee’s hot, and so is the gossip! Lunch consists of soups, sandwiches and salads, with delicious Angus burgers, tuna melts, French dip au jus, and fried chicken sandwiches. For extra-hungry diners, order the “Hungry Man” ham steak with three eggs and trimmings. Light eaters can opt for the “Heart Saver” omelet made with fresh veggies and served with seasonal fruit.

Blackberry Springs Trail

Often described as a good “family” walk, the Blackberry Springs Trail covers 0.75 miles of easy hiking with picture-perfect views. This system of trails takes in the southeastern corner of Lopez Lake, with views of its Arroyo Grande Arm and Wittenberg Arm. Rolling hills, quiet meadows, and wild turkeys can be found along the way, too. The out-and-back trail was named for the blackberries and gooseberries that line the central canyon. Here, lush ferns also grow, as does poison oak, so take care and wear long pants. Dogs are welcome on the trail, so watch out for Fido, too.

San Simeon, CA

Get up close and personal with wildlife like you’ve never seen it before. The majestic Great Northern Elephant Seal migrates to a rookery just north of San Simeon each year, transforming quiet beaches into live theater. Males brawl, females give birth, and pups squeal — and visitors can watch them from a safe distance on the elevated boardwalk viewing area. During winters, the elephant seals are seen mating, molting, birthing or nursing their pups, all visible from the nearby viewing area.
