Climb 107 stairs to snap a photo overlooking downtown Sylva and the mountain backdrop at the most photographed courthouse in NC. Step inside to learn about the beauty and history behind the building. As you walk along Sylva’s Main Street, you are greeted by the stately Jackson County Courthouse at the end of the street. Constructed in 1914, this historic building is home to the public library and features rotating exhibits that offer visitors a look at the county’s history and mountain culture. The community room, formerly the historic courthouse, is now the home of many free music concerts, performances, and community theater. Listed as the first stop on the Sylva Heritage Walk, guided tours of the courthouse are available through the Jackson County Museum, Arts Council and Genealogical Society, which is open daily in the rotunda of the historic building. Make the trek to the top of the courthouse stairs and look back to enjoy the picturesque town of Sylva and mountain vistas in the distance.

Best place to take a selfie in Sylva Tying with the Jackson County Courthouse, the Downtown Sylva Mural on Mill Street is a great place to take a selfie. Created in 2018 by Eron Hare, and commissioned and funded by the Sylva Public Arts Committee, the large facade captures scenes from our town and surrounding area. See if you have what it takes and hike the strenuous terrain of Pinnacle Park, a 7-mile trek that ascends more than 3,000 ft. in elevation. Your reward? Incredible views of the mountains below. Be sure to pack a lunch and camera before embarking on this hiking adventure. The 1,529-acre town park features streams, waterfalls and panoramic views throughout. The 3.4-mile trail to the top follows an old logging road for most of its length, through a grassy ridge and then up a short rocky trail to the Pinnacle where panoramic views of Sylva and Scotts Creek Valley await. Pinnacle Park in Sylva is the state’s first and only Certified Forest Therapy Trail.

Housed in the historic Hooper House, this tourist center and visitor bureau offers brochures, maps, event calendars and more to help you plan your getaway to the western NC mountains. Built in 1905, the historic house was completely restored in 2002 and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. The visitor center is open Monday through Friday from 9am to 5pm and select Saturdays from 10:30am to 2:30pm.
