Cable cars are one of the oldest transportation systems and were invented right here in San Francisco! They have been operating since 1878! No where else in the world have manually operated cable cars running anymore besides San Francisco. It is a true historic landmark and ride! Hours: Monday-Sunday 7am-10:30pm Cable cars come approximately every 10minutes!

Fares are $8 for a one way ticket for everyone of all ages. Exact change is required or reserve an online ticket using the MUNI mobile app. You can also pay using a Clipper card, the Bay Area’s transit card Seniors, those that are disabled or on medicare can receive a discounted ticket for $4 if they take a ride before 9am or after 7pm. If you want unlimited cable car rides, I recommend buying a 1-Day Passport ($13) on the MUNI mobile app! It also gives you unlimited access to other MUNI operated transportation in San Francisco such as the bus or underground tram.

There are three cable car routes you can ride on: 1) California Cable Car: will take you by Chinatown, Downtown, Embarcadero, Financial District, Nob Hill, Pacific Heights, & Western Addition 2) Powell & Hyde Cable Car: will take you by Chinatown, Downtown, Financial District, Fisherman’s Wharf, Nob Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill & South of Market (SoMa) 3) Powell & Mason Cable Car: will take you through Chinatown, Downtown, Financial District, Fisherman’s Wharf, Nob Hill, North Beach, Russian Hill, & South of Market (SoMa)

The open seats where you can dangle off are in the front and back of the cable car. Middle seats are more protected if you don’t want to feel close to the cars. I recommend sitting on the side where the cable faces the Bay for the best views!
