To visit and explore the bridge, I recommend taking public transportation as parking could get chaotic on a busy day. Plus there are also possible chances of car break ins around San Francisco so make sure you are aware of your surroundings! Public transportation options: - From San Francisco to/from the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge: Golden Gate Transit: To/from Downtown or Union Square: Board any GGT bus (Routes 101, 130, and 150) at Salesforce Transit Center (Bus Plaza, Bay A) or along Mission Street (north side of the street, GGT marked stops only). All buses serve the northbound Toll Plaza bus stop. - To/from Civic Center: Board any GGT bus (Routes 101, 130, and 150) at 7th & Market streets or across the street from City Hall at McAllister & Polk streets. All buses serve the northbound Toll Plaza bus stop. - To/from Fisherman’s Wharf: During weekday afternoons, board any GGT bus (Routes 114, 132, 154, and 172) along North Point Street (north side of the street, GGT marked stops only). All buses serve the northbound Toll Plaza bus stop. At all other times, walk or take Muni’s 49 bus line to Van Ness & Union and board any GGT bus (Routes 101, 130, and 150) at the northbound bus stop.

Usually the best time to visit with clear skies is around mid afternoon after 2pm while the mornings are cold, foggy and windy. To plan your visit to the Golden Gate Bridge accordingly, there is a live stream of the Golden Gate Bridge on www.goldengate.org. This website will show you current, live weather forecast of the bridge! Fun fact: the fog in the San Francisco is so popular and heavy that it even has its own social media platform with hundreds of thousands of followers! **Remember to bring a jacket as it is usually windy**

Walking from the Welcome Center (south end) to Vista Point (north end) is about 1.7 miles and can take 45 minutes. Making a roundtrip visit 3.4 miles and lasting 1.5 hours. However, plan to spend 2-3 hours touring the bridge as you might stop to admire the view and take some time taking photos!

Pedestrians, including persons with disabilities using mobility devices such as wheelchairs, are only allowed on the east sidewalk (side facing San Francisco). Hours vary seasonally as follows: Pacific Standard Time (early November to early March - dates vary): East sidewalk hours are 5:00 am to 6:30 pm. Automatically-controlled gates close at 6:30 pm and reopen at 5:00 am. Pacific Daylight Time (early March to early November - dates vary): East sidewalk hours are 5:00 am to 9:00 pm. Automatically-controlled gates close at 9:00 pm and reopen at 5:00 am.

But did you know there’s a “secret” passageway to get to another side of the bridge?

From the sidewalk at the Golden Gate Bridge Vista Point, there is a stairway and passage that takes you underneath the Golden Gate Bridge, leading to another set of stairs up to the Conzelman Road Northwest Parking Lot and the Golden Gate Bridge West Sidewalk.

The passageway beneath the Bridge can be quite noisy, especially when a large vehicle passes over the the bridge, creating a loud bang in that area. If you are sensitive to loud noises, it is advisable to cover your ears or use earplugs while quickly passing through this section.

The west side of the bridge is mainly for those that plan to bike around the Golden Gate Bridge, allowing separate routes between pedestrian and bikers. However the west side also offers stunning viewpoints of the bridge at higher elevation, which is even accessible by foot. More on the next slide.

Battery Spencer, originally Fort Baker, is a historic coastal defense fortification near the Golden Gate Bridge. Built in the late 19th century, it served as a crucial defense point during both World Wars. Today, Battery Spencer provides stunning panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the surrounding area.
