The Hiawatha National Forest is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and covers almost 1 million acres across the region! The forest is separated into two distinct areas, commonly referred to as Eastside and Westside. There are six designated wilderness areas and five National Wild and Scenic Rivers in Hiawatha National Forest: • Big Island Lake Wilderness • Delirium Wilderness • Horseshoe Bay Wilderness • Mackinac Wilderness • Rock River Canyon Wilderness • Round Island Wilderness • Carp River • Indian River • Sturgeon River • Tahquamenon River (East Branch) • Whitefish River

You can drive along main roads throughout the U.P. for miles and miles and enjoy the forest views! Hiawatha land lies in several Michigan counties in both the west and east regions: Chippewa, Delta, Mackinac, Alger, Schoolcraft, and Marquette counties. There are many wildlife species that you can keep an eye out for while you drive! From timber wolves, black bears, and wild turkeys on the ground, to hawks and bald eagles in the sky!

Off the main highways you will find many forest roads that lead deep into the wilderness areas! Whether you’re nature viewing, dispersed camping, or searching for a day hike, there’s beauty everywhere you turn! These forest roads can be rough and narrow, so take them carefully and slowly. Always look for wildlife and adhere to any and all posted signage. Also be sure to verify if a permit is required for any type of backcountry activity like camping, hunting, or backpacking.

With hundreds of miles of trails throughout Hiawatha National Forest, you’ll find a hike for everyone’s skill-level. From difficult, rugged trails to paved, accessible trails, there’s no shortage of amazing views and ways to experience the forest areas. If you’re not into hiking, there are also mountain biking trails, history trails, and interpretive trails for outdoor learning! In winter months, many hiking trails become cross-country ski trails! As always, remember to follow the Leave No Trace principles and adhere to posted signage.

There are countless lakes and miles of flowing rivers, finding water activities is a great choice for your time in Hiawatha National Forest! BOATING Motorized boats are allowed on several lakes and rivers, you can find boat ramps and launching piers throughout the forest! CANOE, KAYAK, OR PADDLE Hiawatha National Forest even has a Canoe Trail! The Au Train Canoe trail is 10 miles long and is excellent for canoeing. Not all water areas are suitable for these types of activities, so be sure to check weather and water conditions and signage prior to visiting. FISHING Fishing is permitted in many of the lakes and rivers running through Hiawatha National Forest. You’ll find different species in different lakes ranging from smallmouth bass to northern pike. Be sure to obtain appropriate licenses before fishing.

Hiawatha National Forest has borders that reach three of the five Great Lakes - Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Superior. Not to mention all the lakes and rivers within the forest such as Indian Lake, Little Bass Lake, Carp Lake, and so many more! Needless to say there is PLENTY of shoreline and lakeshore to stretch out and enjoy the beaches. For spectacular views, visit Grand Island National Recreation Area via ferry or private watercraft, and there you’ll find incredible sandy beaches and seclusion! No motorized vehicles or e-bikes are allowed. Campsites are available and you can kayak directly to them!
